A century-old merchant name, reborn as a house of design.
黃 (huáng) means yellow: the colour of the loess earth of China's Central Plains, of ripe grain, and of gold.
As a surname it traces to the ancient State of Huang, in today's Huangchuan County, Henan. When the kingdom of Chu annexed it in 648 BC, its people kept the name of their lost state as their own. Henan is where the name began, and where this family's story is set.
A hundred years ago, the Huang family were merchants in Shenqiu, a county on the Ying River in eastern Henan. By family account they held more than half of the county's land, and ran its department store: Shenqiu's Saks Fifth Avenue, and in its world, bigger still.
The Ying flows east into the Huai, and in those years its towns lived by river trade. A merchant house lives on its name: what it sells, it stands behind. Huang Studio carries that name forward, a century on and an ocean away, by the same rule.

Every commission starts with the person it's for: their story, their home, their family's history. We bring Chinese heritage and contemporary design to the same table.

Bespoke pieces, heirloom redesigns and narrative jewelry in jade, gold and pearl, designed around the person who will wear them.

Homes that hold two cultures, Chinese heritage and modern Toronto living, from a single room to a whole house.

Wardrobe consulting and styling for every day, for occasions, and for the moments that call for silk.

Commissioned paintings, murals, illustration and installation, from children's stories to whole walls.
Tell us what you have in mind: a ring reset from a grandmother's jade, a room that feels like home, an outfit for a day you'll remember, or a wall that needs a story.
